The "Garden Route", one of South Africa's premier tourist destinations, is situated between Storms River and Mossel Bay, on the southern Cape coast. Three principal components can be identified, a coastline, an interior coastal plateau, part of an ancient wavecut platform, and the serrated mountain ranges of the Cape Fold Belt. The coastal landscape includes long beaches and small coves, sea cliffs and caves, modern and ancient sand dunes, and lakes. River estuaries contrast with ephemeral river mouths that only open during floods. The interior plateau reveals deeply-incised river gorges.
