The Cappadocia area of central Turkey is a land of vast plains with rolling hills and rugged volcanic peaks, the highest of which is the snow-capped Mount Erciyes (3916 m). The area is covered by flat-lying volcaniclastics, lavas, and to a lesser extent lacustrine sediments. Erosion has scoured deep valleys and gorges in the plains producing areas of spectacular "badlands ", mostly due to differential erosion of the hard lavas and relatively soft volcanic ash and pumice.
