Trip the light fantastic this summer with grasses. Great all-year-round, they come alive in the morning sun. Grasses are among the most prolific and successful plants in the world. From the towering, woody bamboos to tiny alpine turf, they're foundin almost every habitat on earth and are designed to survive. Why so successful? Because the growing tips of the plants are near ground level, grazing animals (or gardeners) can remove all their teaves yet the plants carry on growing. That success didn'textend to British domestic gardens until about a decade ago, when their multitude of shapes and colours attracted the attention of designers. From that point on, delicate fronds, drooping foliage and see-through screening became part of the gardening landscape, thanks to the huge variety of grasses available. Whether your garden is formal or in true cottage style, a haven of minimalist chic or an ebullient mass of vegetation, there are grasses to suit. Some ornamental grasses are actually sedges or rushes, but they all give a grassy effect and are grouped together in most books and catalogues.
