Efficiency Improvement of Computer Power Supplies Utilizing Active Power Factor Corrector

摘要

Computers in the world operate continuously, which makes their efficiency a very critical issue. An attempt of improving that efficiency by utilizing power electronics circuits based on active power factor correctors have been simulated and tested. The effect of using the active power factor corrector is illustrated in a simple circuit simulated by CIRCUITMAKER. Implementing this technology, combined with architectural-level and components-level improvements, will result in a significant efficiency improvement. Using this technology will boost the efficiency from 65-70 in traditional power supplies to an efficiency of approximately 90. Additionally, the active power factor corrector will improve the power factor to a value close to unity, which means eliminating the reactive power drawn by the power supply.
