摘要

One solution reportedly being considered is a relaxation of rules, making it easier for nurses to enter the UK to fill vacancies (Triggle, 2016).While at first glance such a consideration makes sense, I would warn of the pitfalls associated with free and unfettered access to fill healthcare vacancies. It is a well-educated, motivated healthcare team that is required to promote the cost-effective, high-quality care deserved by the stewards and beneficiaries of the UK's health system. For the future of this country and its healthcare system, it is well worth the time investment from legislators to develop a nursing immigration scheme that provides effective applicant support, and efficient evaluation of nursing-specific applicant merit, while at the same time eliminating the complicated network of redundant mandates. Use of the UK's technological expertise could not only facilitate information transfer, but also analyse and direct applicant specialties into areas of greatest need. For example, some nursing applicants may have expertise required for intensive acute care settings while others may show greatest aptitude for community support.
