We investigate the application of Gaussian quadrature to experimentally measured gamma-ray yields (as a function of detector angle) to determine total gamma-ray emission probabilities. For a fixed number of detectors, the detector angles can be chosen to optimize the accuracy of the integration. In many cases the integration can be made exact, if information about the gamma-ray emitting system is known. Applications to specific cases will be discussed. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.
