The arguments advanced for the change are logical and irrefutable. They capitalise on the current capabilities of modern commercial and military aircraft and implementation would result in a heading reference untainted by the uncertainties of the accuracies of magnetic variation packages or a lack of updates to them. The article cites that most modern aircraft have 2 or more inertial reference systems (IRS) to accommodate a single system failure. And I note that the Aviation Heading Reference Transition Action Group (AHRTAG) is working with ICAO to develop a change strategy and that it believes the changeover from Magnetic to True (Mag2True) could be in operation by March 2030. An ambitious target but one to be supported if the practical difficulties can be overcome.
