Shell has signed a deal with Dutch dredging firm Van der Kamp to supply one of the world's first LNG-powered dredging vessels. Shell will supply LNG as a marine fuel to the Ecodelta dredger, which will be based at the port of Rotterdam. The dredger is being built by the Netherlands' Barkmeijer shipyard and is due in service in 2018. The vessel will operate until 2023. Shell is due to take delivery of a 6,500m~3 LNG bunker vessel at Rotterdam by mid-year. The firm has reserved part of the LNG capacity for loading of small vessels at the Netherlands' 8.7mn t/yr Gate terminal. Shell also has capacity for loading LNG by truck at Gate. Demand for LNG as a marine fuel is rising after the International Maritime Organisation agreed in October to cap marine fuel sulphur emissions at 0.5pc from 2020.
