Environmental Developmet was launched three and a half years ago by Elsevier as the transdisciplinary journal of SCOPE (the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment), supported by UNESCO's Division of Ecological and Earth Sciences and by UNEP. The journal was established to provide a forum for environmental scientists and practitioners to communicate and discuss emerging environmental and ecological problems and solutions. By placing emphasis on the policy and practical implications of research work, the journal has striven to close the gap between researchers and policy makers (used here to include regulators and decision makers). This has placed the journal in a uniquely important position, showcasing research which spans boundaries between nations and disciplines and acting as a forum for the international research and policy communities. Over the past three years, the journal has covered a wide range of environmental issues from biodiversity management, climate change and pollution impacts to the management of marine ecosystems and the impacts of urbanisation. Issues have been explored from the perspective of emerging problems and solutions with management and policy implications being at the forefront.
