'Blue Growth': Is it Really Sustainable?- Transport and Destruction of Syrian Chemical Weapons on theMediterranean Sea -
In 2014, the destruction of Syria's chemical weapons was carried out on-board the vessel MV Cape Ray, belonging to the US Maritime Administration (MARAD). In order to neutralise and destroy these chemicals, the controversial system of hydrolysis was used, the effects of which are relatively little understood from a scientificperspective. This mission has highlighted important issues pertaining to the unwillingness of the Mediterranean coastal States to implement the international maritime and overall environmental institutional framework. These developments, added to the possibility of accidental pollution, raise questions as to the impact of the project while creating an extremely dangerous precedent which concerns the systematic future circumvention of the relevant legislative framework and the sustainability of the European Union's (EU's) "Blue Growth" policy in the region.
