Practical Application of Coke Plant Automation Systems

This paper describes the experiences gained with the installation, commissioning and operation of coke plant process management systems. Such systems have been successfully applied to existing as well as new coke plant installations. They include the control of the battery heating system in combination with charging and pushing schedules. The advantages and objectives are improved production standards, coke quality, energy efficiency, operational safety, maintenance expenses, emission levels and battery service life. Operational experiences with the automation systems in the Taranto, Italy, coke plant as well as the initial experiences with the application of automation at the new 8.3 m batteries at ThyssenKrupp Schwelgern, Germany, are described, with emphasis on the newly developed and installed PROven system. This breakthrough technology controls the pressure within each individual oven chamber during charging and throughout the coking cycle. The system does not require aspirating steam or high-pressure liquor and is particularly effective for the control of battery emissions.
