Higher productivity at Charter Steel resulted from the following parameters: New, deeper lower shell for increased heel and slag allowance, as well as better slag-free tapping. Triple radius design for better brick retention and wall life. New taphole closure system to clean whiskers from nozzle block for quick turnaround, rapid exchange and improved safety. New patented, pin-type bottom electrode for increased current-carrying capacity, lined with lower-cost ramming material instead of conductive bricks for lower repair costs and shorter repair times. New pushout device to provide rapid exchange of the bottom electrode. Provision of handling tongs and maintenance stand to allow relining of the pin electrode off-line, instead of the periodic hot repairs required by the conductive bottom.
