A blown pump seal ignited a large fire on a coking unit last week at LyondellBasell’s 268,000 b/d refinery in Houston, Texas. The company noted the cause of the fire in a filing to federal hazardous materials monitors. Emergency crews reported the fire extinguished without injury shortly before 1pm ET on 8 April, two hours after the fire was first detected. Local media images showed thick, black smoke and flames pouring out of a process area next to drums used to collect and break up petroleum coke, and smoke could be seen across the horizon from downtown Houston. LyondellBasell said there was no maintenance underway on the unit at the time of the fire. An outage on the LyondellBasell coker could offset the effect of cuts in heavy Canadian crude caused by repairs to TransCanada’s Keystone pipeline. The refiner has shifted away from Venezuelan supplies to heavy Colombian and Canadian feedstock over the past three years. LyondellBasell reported combined heavy imports of 171,709 b/d from Mexico, Colombia and Canada in January, the most recent month with data from the Energy Information Administration.
