Automated solid-phase microextraction (SPME) has been commercially available since SPME fibers were introduced (1993), but most of the SPME applications in the literature do not involve automation. This presentation describes three automated SPME applications that were developed in our laboratory: blood alcohol, volatiles in beer that adversely affect the taste, and vinyl chloride in polyvinyl chloride. These analyses are usually done with conventional static headspace (SHS), but SPME has several advantages over headspace, including greater sensitivity and elimination of tailing and loss of analyte, due to active sample paths. Advantages of automated over manual SPME include increased productivity and better precision.
