Damage mechanisms of Continuous Caster Rolls : from failure analysis to lab investigation

Continuous caster rolls are subject to harsh in service environment. High slab contact pressure, service temperature, presence of oxides and slags particles, thermal and mechanical cyclic stresses and corrosive cooling media give raise to a variety of different damaging mechanisms including wear, thermo-mechanical fatigue, oxidation and corrosion. Currently, suited performance are achieved by martensitic stainless steels claddings deposited by submerged arc welding. Aim of this study is to review some common damage mechanisms of caster rolls. The behavior of different martensitic stainless steel grades will be compared by means of customary laboratory thermal fatigue and wear tests aimed at investigating the influence of microstructure on roll degradation.
