This book reviews hydrothermal mineral deposits and related processes, as implied by the title. However, it also includes an introduction to a potpourri of topics, from hydrothermal principles and fluids, hydrothermal alteration, and tectonic settings of mineral deposits, through description of several styles of mineral deposits, to the relationships between hydrothermal systems and the biosphere, as well as information on meteorite impacts and the search for extraterrestrial life, ending with a "brief panoramic on uranium mineral systems." The discussion of mineral deposits, or "mineral systems," as is preferred by Pirajno to imply a more extensive and inclusive environment, includes intrusion-related, porphyry and epithermal, skarn, submarine, sedimentary rock-hosted stratiform and strata bound, and orogenic, amagmatic, and deposits of an uncertain origin. These chapters are, in part, updates from a 1992 treatise by Pirajno entitled Hydrothermal Mineral Deposits. Magmatic deposits in igneous complexes were described in a previous book by the author on Ore Deposits and Mantle Plumes, published in 2000.
