For the past 250 years, concrete has been fundamental to the way we build - it is quite literally the foundation on which our cities are constructed. The Romans embraced it as a modern material wonder of its time, creating what is still the largest unreinforced solid concrete dome in the world. Its material properties are inherently striking, transforming dry powder into a composite solid using only water. Little wonder, then, that it is now the most common man-made material on the planet, with the equivalent of one cubic metre produced per head of population peryear.
