Emerging digital technology may soon change the industry's view of seismic imaging. In the United States, where individuals may own mineral rights, thousands of wells are privately owned and operated. In addition to the super majors and large independents, the petroleum industry is populated with small, agile players often operating in specific locations or on relatively short business cycles. In some cases, these smaller operators have moved away from acquiring new seismic simply because the cost and time taken has not been reflected in the value of the information contained in the final deliverable seismic product, the calculation being that it is simply "cheaper to drill."
