Claiming legitimacy because we audit, oversee and ensure alignment is a balloon about to burst.... Claiming legitimacy because we show up and do programs that we have been doing for years is not enough." Those prophetic words, written more than a decade ago by Joel Henning in The Future of Staff Groups, go right to the heart of the purpose of ASSE's Value of the Safety Professional project. As Henning predicted, the "value" movement has taken roots in corporate America. "Doing a good job" is now only part of the equation. Employers want to know what value that job and the individual performing it brings to the organization's bottom line. Value notions have also redefined traditional job responsibilities, expanding roles into new and sometimes uncharted areas.
