COMPLIANCE WATCHDOGS have warned timber producers of the legal implications of supplying softwoods that fail to meet structural specifications. Some timber recently tested in Australia fell well short of structural design properties required under Standard AS 2017.1, despite meeting visual standards specified in AS 2858. "The future of visually graded structural softwood timber in Australia is being recalibrated as a result of these tests, with a focus on compliance with standards, trade practices and consumer protection requirements," market development manager for the Timber Development Association of New South Wales (TDA) Nick Livanes told Inwood.
