Working at height is the main cause of workplace deaths and a major cause of workplace accidents. Workplace accidents are not only unpleasant they are also bad for business; sickness, absence, staff turnover and the risk of claims can prove costly. It is estimated that these injuries are costing the UK economy around 60 million founds per year. Furthermore, employers who fail to safeguard their employees may face prosecution from the HSE and a heavy fine. Employer liability insurance may not cover the costs of a prosecution and fines must be paid out of the company purse. Working at height remains a hot topic as far as the HSE is concerned, and employers must, therefore, ensure that they have a sound understanding of the regulations; what working at height is, who it applies to and how it applies.
