The current issue contains two up-to-date reviews, one on the use of benzodiazepines and the other on suicidal and violent behaviour in mood disorders. The use of benzodiazepines is a source of controversy, although it has been discussed for more than 20 years and prescribed for almost 50 years after its introduction as anxiolytics and hypnotics. The review of Donoghue and Lader addresses this issue and comes to the conclusion that long-term prescription of benzodiazepines is unjustified both from a lack of systemic databases as well as the risk of dependence. Specifically the young and the old are at risk. The authors conclude that regulatory authorities may need to take a more active role in curbing such undesirable practice.
