CHANGES IN THE WEATHER

During the middle period of this decade the country experienced a run of particularly hot and dry summers which had been preceded by cold, dry springs. The effects of this were to limit grass growth especially to unwa-tered areas of the golf course. Many green-keepers were able to retain a good grass cover to greens, surrounds and tees, but fairways were often severely weakened as a result of long term drought stress over several seasons. Some clubs have or are in the process of installing fairway irrigation as an insurance against such stress in future, while many clubs are rapidly updating their existing irrigation systems on greens, tees and approaches.
