When carrying out advisory work in the 1970's and 1980's, frustration and annoyance were not uncommon emotions experienced, particularly at golf clubs. Indeed such emotions are not a rarity today. So why? -well quite simply such emotions arise as a consequence of clubs ignoring advice and failing to realise the often enormous agronomic and golfing potential that prevails. Again one can pose the question why is this potential not being realised and opportunities being lost and in this instance the answer can be put down to a few simple words, namely lack of continuity and often lack of the most appropriate management policy and its implementation. It has to be quickly added, however, that these discrepancies concerning continuity, policy objectives and implementation invariably fall at the feet of club officials and particularly green committees. If one can imagine the frustration and annoyance felt by annually visiting agronomists then spare a thought for the poor greenkeeper or course manager whohas to live and work with these inadequacies day in and day out throughout the whole year. I hope that these few words of introduction do not convey that all is gloom and doom as there are thankfully a large and increasing number of green committees andclubs who have seen the light and who plan their course management and its implementation in the finest detail with outstanding success and rewards.
