foot and mouth vaccination

Some time ago I was very much involved in introducing and supporting a foot and mouth disease (FMD) vaccine in Asia. You can learn from everything you do and I learned a lot from this activity. In those years one of my favourite Asian countries was very active in trying to establish disease free zones, and of course FMD was one of the diseases to control.I was travelling throughout the country giving presentations on FMD and its control through vaccination. The question was frequently asked about the efficacy of an FMD vaccine that was developed in Europe and used in Asia. Of course that was, for several reasons, a very relevant question. The answer, however, would inevitably end up in doing a field efficacy study. This was not considered a problem by itself as when you design a good protocol you need to include a negative control group.
