Bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics. When this occurs we can have difficulties in treating the diseases they cause in pigs. However, if the bacterium concerned has zoonotic implications, then it may be a case that we have difficulty in treating the disease it causes in man -which is more serious. Today there is a debate going on as to whether zoonotic pathogens acquire their antibiotic resistance as a consequence of coming into contact with antibiotics when they are in animals or when they are in man. This is reflected in an ongoing debate on the use (overuse) of antibiotics in man and animals.
