If a piglet gets off to a good start in life then this impetus will be maintained right the way through its life. To make this good start though it is essential that the newborn piglet quickly suckles and gets a good intake of the first milk, or colostrum. Colostrum has a very high solids content, with the protein fraction being particularly high (see Table 1).
