Internet SCSI, known as iSCSI, is the latest standard poised to enable the emerging SAN (storage-area-network) market. Internet SCSI is not a replacement for SCSI but rather a means of encapsulating or tunnelling SCSI packets over Ethernet networks by appending a header that describes how to extract SCSI control data from a TCP/IP packet. Because iSCSI is media-independent, it can run over any network that supports TCP and it doesn't require a fork-lift upgrade to implement. Additional - because iSCST, like Fibre Channel, looks like SCSI to applications - its use will be transparent to applications. Many vendors hope that iSCST will bring SAN to Ethernet networks.
