The tripletndash;triplet absorption spectra of several phenylnaphthalenes are measured and the absolute extinction coefficients are evaluated using the simultaneous ESRndash;optical approach. The results of selfhyphen;consistenthyphen;field molecularhyphen;orbital calculations are compared with experiment and good agreement is found for the energies, oscillator strengths, and vibrational envelopes of the tripletndash;triplet transitions. In addition, the angles of polarization of the tripletndash;triplet transitions are predicted, and their significance in the interpretation of triplethyphen;state structures is discussed.
