In the US,Occidental Petroleum Corp.is operating a pilot enhanced oil recovery(EOR)program at the conventional Hobbs oilfield in the portion of the Permian in southeast New Mexico as a means to boost output from the field.Occidental has told investors it hopes to declare EOR viable later this year and give its first commercial project the go-ahead in 2020.Occidental CEO Vicki Hollub said in an interview,“We are trying to be very conservative,but certainly we believe that EOR can improve recovery rates from 10-11 to 17-18.It's a lot.When you consider the scale of the Permian Basin,to do that will be amazing.” She went on to add,“The pilot wells deliver more than what our model indicated they would,so it's a success.Now we have to determine how to build the infrastructure.You need scale to make it work.”
