The bandwidth of lumped electro‐optic waveguide devices is shown to be limited by the intrinsic inductance as well as the capacitance of the electrodes. Under the optimal design the bandwidth‐length product is calculated to be 1.8 GHz cm for LiNbO3. The electric field distribution, the overlap of the electric and optical fields, and the gap‐width dependence of the switching voltage are also discussed.
