Quenching cross sections of neon metastable atoms by light molecules

The quenching cross sections of Ne metastable levels by N2and CO were measured to be (in Aring;2units): 8.3plusmn;0.4, 8.7plusmn;0.4 for 3s(3/2)2level and 8.0plusmn;0.4, 9.1plusmn;0.4 for 3s(1/2)0level, respectively, at 443 K. The metastables are produced by a pulsed electron beam and their population was monitored by fluorescence induced by a cw dye laser.
