Xhyphen;ray measurements in ErCl3and ErI3solutions indicate that there is a firmly held octahedral arrangement of H2O molecules around the Er3+ion. In addition, there are present Er3+sngbnd;Cl2mdash;and Er3+sngbnd;I2mdash;ionhyphen;pair complexes. Finally there is a large amount of order introduced into the structure by the presence of the ions, with evidence for an ``icelike'' quasihyphen;lattice.
