The large collision diameters for the self pressure broadening of OCS and BrCN can be explained in terms of P. W. Anderson's general theory as due to the first order dipolehyphen;dipole interaction. The temperature dependence of the pressure broadening requires the introduction of other interactions. It is possible to obtain both the magnitude and temperature dependence of the pressure broadening by considering both the first order dipolehyphen;dipole and quadrupolehyphen;dipole interactions.
