The country's Ministry of Petroleum is unlikely to see its new requirement for zero manganese-based additives in all grades of gasoline sold in the country enforced on the original effective date of May 1,2019,as the industry struggles to find economical solutions for meeting the new requirement. In Pakistan, the current maximum limit for manganese-based additives in gasoline is 24 mg/L.The phase-out of these additives was called for by automobile manufacturers that complained high concentrations of manganese-based additives in gasoline were damaging car engines.Local refiners depend on the additives to raise octane to the required level.Elimination of these additives would require refiners to use other high-RON materials, which are too expensive as Pakistan's refineries have minimal naphtha isomerization and reforming capacity.
