A simultaneous system of firsthyphen;order partial differential equations is proposed for a quasihyphen;isothermal description of experimental results on the decomposition of gypsum obtained by Heideetal. (1980). The equations resemble Volterrandash;Lotkahyphen;type models of population dynamics. They are shown to contain parameter regions leading to selfhyphen;oscillations and oscillating spatial structures which may explain the observed oscillations of overall decomposition rate. The properties of slightly modified equations with respect to front propagation and creation are inspected for the possibility of providing a second, alternative explanation of experimental facts, basically taking into account the external heating of the sample.
