Qualitative general characteristics are derived which pertain to the spectrum of relaxation times for two common chemical reaction mechanisms. These reaction models are often invoked to interpret results of chemical relaxation experiments, such as temperaturehyphen;jump. The results are generally applicable for two reaction models for any number of elementary steps and involve no approximations. These qualitative, but necessary, conditions are very useful guidelines when several relaxation processes are observed. Thus one can determine if the data is compatible with the models before undertaking a complete quantitative analysis which may be difficult or very involved.
