Experiments are described in which lead sheets, sandwiched betweentwo pairs of steel plates separated by a pre-specified gap midwayalong the specimen, have been loaded in tension. The nominal stressat the onset of global yielding was found experimentally to be abouttwice the unconstrained yield stress of the metal, over a range ofvalues for the initial gap. the nominal stress was then found to fallin an approximately linear fashion with increasing displacement, asthe load-bearing section necked down.
