Cross sections for reactions ofOHminus;sdot;H2OwithNO2are reported for interaction energies from 0.2 to 6 eV. Reactions producing the ionsHNOminus;3andNOminus;2sdot;H2Owere observed, in addition to charge transfer and collisional dissociation. These reactions were not observable at an interaction energy of 0.04 eV. Based upon these results, upper and lower bounds for the electron affinity ofHNO3are0.39les;E.A.(HNO3)les;0.73thinsp;eVand for the bond dissociation energy ofNOminus;2ndash;H2Oare0.1les;D(NOminus;2ndash;H2O)thinsp;0.6thinsp;eV.It is suggested that the strong energy dependence of the cross sections for the reactions formingHNOminus;3andNOminus;2sdot;H2Ois the result of dissociation of these ions before detection.
