Growth With a population of almost 50,000 Dornbirn is the most populous community in Vorarlberg and it is among the most strongly growing cities in Austria. The city's village roots are still visible in the settlement structure and in a number of individual buildings. Venerable, well preserved farmhouses and town houses coexist peacefully with large urban structures. The continuous growth and the preservation of this strong heterogeneity are among the greatest challenges confronting urban planners in Dornbirn. The competition held in 2013 with title "Design of public space - embedding the western inner city in the historically developed larger inner-city framework", which, although somewhat unwieldy, accurately describes the problem, should also be seen against this background. How to better connect the city core, both functionally and in design terms, with the adjoining inner-city district and with the school district, which caters for 1400 pupils, was long a subject of discussion. Where until two to three decades ago small, village-like structures and functions were dominant, a busy urban quarter with numerous shops developed, but it failed to mesh together with the old inner city around the Marktplatz (market square).
