Lifetimes and selfhyphen;quenching cross sections of individual rotational levels in theBthinsp;3Pgr;0+ustate of79Br2and81Br2were measured by observing the fluorescence decay following excitation by acoustohyphen;optically chopped, single mode Ar+and Kr+lasers. The results, which depend strongly onvprime; andJprime;, were interpreted in terms of gyroscopic predissociation. This type of predissociation, exhibiting maxima in the neighborhood ofvprime;=33 andvprime;lsim;18, appears to be much stronger in bromine than in iodine.
