ABSTRACTThe antimicrobial activity of a variety of aliphatic diols and their esters has been investigated. Inhibition of growth ofBacillus subtilis60015 was found to depend on chain length and position of the hydroxyl groups. 1,2‐diols were more effective than 1,3diols. Esterification also affected antimicrobial activity. Studies with membrane vesicles prepared fromB. subtilisindicated that inhibition of amino acid transport is a primary antimicrobial effect of diols and their ester
