The optical absorption spectrum of anhydrous solid FeCl3has been measured over the range 0.5ndash;6 eV by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Features at 2.5, 3.65, and 5.25 eV are assigned tourarr;gcharge transfer excitations. Other features at 1.1, 1.4, and 2.1 eV are assigned tograrr;gcharge transfer (2.1 eV) anddndash;d(1.1, 1.4 eV) excitations. The contribution of FeCl3to absorption in intercalated graphite compounds is indicated.
