Comment on ‘‘Characterization of TiO2, LiNb3O8, and (Ti0.65Nb0.35)O2compound growth observed during Ti:LiNbO3optical waveguide fabrication’’
The formation of LiNb3O8during the preparation of optical waveguides in LiNbO3has been reported recently. The limited solid solubility of LiNb3O8in commercially grown crystals of LiNbO3is illustrated by reference to the appropriate phase diagram. It is suggested that the approach of thermodynamic equilibrium accounts for the formation of the observed LiNb3O8phase rather than a process involving evaporation of Li.
