The role of seed banks in the conservation of Mediterranean flora

摘要

The high number of endangered and vulnerable plant species growing in the Mediterranean area, calls for emergency solutions to prevent possible extinctions during the time which is necessary for the aplication of other conservation methods. The establishment of a net of seed banks with emphasis in local endemics would provide the most practical answer to the problem. The effort would also result in a considerable improvement in the availability of the less accessible plant material for phyto-taxonomic research.
