Properties and structure of soda‐lime aluminosilicate glasses

The properties of soda‐lime aluminosilicate glasses have been measured for several series of glasses containing a constant silica content, with varying ratios of soda to lime and of modifier oxides to alumina. The results demonstrate that a systematic variation in the effect of modifier ions occurs as lime replaces soda. The sharp breaks observed in the properties of sodium aluminosilicate glasses disappear as soda is replaced by lime. A structural model is suggested to account for these changes in behavior.
