YAG : Nd3plus;waveguides of dimensions 50 mm by 4 mm by 30 mgr;m, each optically contacted with a glass substrate, were realized by grinding and polishing. The effective refractive indices measured for the waveguide modes at the 0.6328hyphen;mgr;m wavelength agreed well with theory. By coating the planehyphen;parallel polished endfaces of one of the waveguides with dielectric mirrors, aYAG:Nd3plus;waveguide laser was produced; the threshold of this laser in pulsed operation was 10 J. The pump efficiency (inversion density per pump energy) for this laser was estimated at eegr; 1012sol;J mm3, a value which is of the same order of magnitude as that for conventional YAG : Nd3plus;lasers pumped in comparable pump systems.
