摘要

This paper provides theoretical treatments for the deformation mechanism of liquid crystals by the light scattering technique. Several calculations are carried out in two cases. One is the time dependence of the change in light scattering patterns when a rectangular phase of an electric field strength is applied to nematic liquid crystals. The calculated result indicates that the molecular aggregates having rodlike textures have large orientational disorder of optical axes with respect to the rod axis in the absence of an applied field, but, with time, the degree of the disorder tends to decrease and rods orient predominantly in the direction of an electric field. The other is the change in light scattering patterns when a magnetic field is applied to cholesteric liquid crystals. The calculation result is obtained by considering twist angle disorder, reflecting the uncertainty of cholesteric twisting along the screw axis. The calculated results in the two cases are in rather good agreement with the results observed already.
