Infrared spectroscopic studies of naphthalene and naphthalenehyphen;d8are reported as follows: (a) far infrared studies of solid C10H8in the region 450 to 130 cmmdash;1, (b) studies of single crystals of C10H8with polarized light in the spectral region 3500mdash;450 cmmdash;1for theabandbcplanes at normal incidence, (c) study of gaseous C10H8in the spectral region 1350mdash;440 cmmdash;1, (d) studies of single crystals of C10D8with polarized light in the spectral region 3400mdash;500 cmmdash;1for theabplane at normal incidence, (e) study of a gaseous C10D8in the spectral region 1000mdash;700 cmmdash;1. Most likely symmetry assignments for the absorptions of C10H8and C10D8are given and some of the bands of C10D8are correlated with those of C10H8.
