It is shown, for several groups of atoms, that the term values of lowhyphen;energy Rydberg excitations are linearly correlated with the corresponding ionization potentials. The form of this relation isT(mgr;,agr;,n)/Z2=anagr;Imgr;/Z2+bnagr;,@qLwhereT(mgr;,agr;,n) is the term value of thenth lowesthyphen;energy Rydberg state of agr;th type (i.e., agr; is a symmetry index) derived from the mgr;th cationic parent;Imgr;is the ionization potential;Zis the core charge; andanagr;andbnagr;are the correlation coefficients. A discussion of the interceptsbnagr;leads to the concept of an average (or zerohyphen;order) member of a given group of atoms and to determination of spectroscopic data for this rsquo;rsquo;average atom.rsquo;rsquo;
